Parent Trust Father's Groups are Back!
29th June, 2010
After a break for part of this year Parent Trust's "Being the Dad you Want to Be" is again running. Due to unforeseen agency difficulties the dad's programmes were not able to be run for the first part of 2010. This interrupted seven years of fathers coming to our groups to build their awareness and abilities as dads. We are delighted that "Being the Father you Want to Be" is now to be available for term three and four of 2010.
While Parent Trust runs a large number of programmes for mothers we know it is important for both parents where possible to contribute to the parenting in the family. Dad"s programmes have played an important part in the work of men coming to know the value of their positive involvement with their children and how significant this is to their child"s development. One dad comments after attending a group; "I listen to my son, draw him out, encourage him to talk about how he"s feeling, rather than rush him to my solution for his surface problem. I'm much more able to talk about my doubts, let him see that I don't have all the answers, but I can help him find his. We're very close"...."I'm humbled by the opportunity to share what really counts with other guys from all walks of life" There are also dads or other caregivers that carry the full responsibility for raising children and our programmes are designed to accommodate different types of parenting situations. Another father comments; " One of the problems with being a divorced father is the feelings of inadequacy as a parent. Our group has given me feedback and reassurance that I do matter and that I am important to my kids."
Our groups are offered in stages. Most parents start with "Being the Parent you Want to Be" (mums or dads) where they begin to learn appropriate parenting approaches and learn to deal with their own stresses that arise out of the challenges of day to day parenting. Parents often choose then, to continue their work in another group called "Parenting from the Inside Out" where they can work on some of the troublesome patterns they want to shift. These often link to past experiences and this group can help parents to develop and strengthen new ways with their own children.
